PITBULLS vs IMPORTED AMERICAN BULLIES

An American Bully is not a large Pitbull.

In most dog breeds one will find some Pitbull heritage this is true of an American bully however a quality dog will in no way behave or resemble a pit in nature or in confirmation as these traits will long be bred out over generations of mixing different breeds of dog where the pit was only one of its ancestors , the rest being a collection of bulldogs , french bulldogs , Staffies and generally broad shouldered mix breeds which eventually produced the American bully. As is the case with local dogs some do still display Pit characteristics and its critical that if you are buying a puppy off local stock that you visit the breeder meet the parent and ensure that you are comfortable with the dogs nature, if you are in anyway intimidated by the dog do not buy the pup. Again we will refer you to breeders who stock well socialized adult dogs who don’t have pit natures .

“But a dog is only aggressive or mean in relation to how it is brought up by its family? “

I hear this quote repeatedly from Pit owners after each attack on a child and it infuriates me, if you have a passive Pit who is friendly to your family, the public and other animals then its 95 % sure that its a poor quality dog and that you have bought a mutt.

Every breed type was bred for a purpose, just like a jack russell will chase everything in sight as it was bred to catch rats or a Collie will herd its human family, so a good quality pit bull was bred to fight, the entire structure of the dog serves its gladiator nature, it has an absence of body fat that its skin cannot be shredded, its nose is designed that it can breath while clinging to an opponent, it can run up a 3m or higher vertical wall. It is an unstoppable force once it commences fighting and owners will often relate stories of how they got bitten attempting to separate the neighbors poodle from their pits jaws .

A good friend of mine the equivalent of South Africas Chuck Norris , Shiaan Larry Voster former president of the SA Pit bull club will relate that owning a Pit Bull is like owning a gun you always give it the deference and respect accorded it, he a former quality pit owner adored his two outstanding pits, his female described as one of the loves of his life yet he cannot help remarking with honesty that after they had passed there was a sense of relief as he was always on guard and having to take great care with his dogs as they were simply jealous of other peoples affection toward him .

Comparatively

An American bully is by nature entirely stable , the imported dog is easily socialized with its family , a child can throughly abuse his/her bully , fingers in its eyeballs , pulling its ears , riding it like a horse , cracking it on its head , dragging it around the yard on a leash or in a pram , the dog is at its best when its getting attention regards;ess of the type rough or soft , they are warm affectionate , lovable and careful around children and the family . I have walked King and another dog has come up attacking him , he twists his head to the side and ignores his attacker advancing forward confidently without going into a rage or without my losing control over him , simaltaneously my female Ola i have seen her attacked by another dog and to defend her selves she simply rolled out ion the way and backed up until i could reduce her , i have no doubt that should she have wanted to fight that the other dog would be entirely out matched however such is her nature that she has nothing to prove .

Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982, according to research compiled by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animals 24-7, an animal-news organization that focuses on humane work and animal-cruelty prevention.

Another report published in the April 2011 issue of Annals of Surgery found that one person is killed by a pit bull every 14 days, two people are injured by a pit bull every day, and young children are especially at risk. The report concludes that “these breeds should be regulated in the same way in which other dangerous species, such as leopards, are regulated.” That report was shared with TIME by PETA, the world’s largest animal-rights organization.

“Every kind of dog is neglected and abused,” Clifton agrees. “And not every kind of dog responds to the neglect and abuse by killing and injuring people.”

TRAINING MY BULLY

A Bully as a puppy is exceptionally easy to train however once its habits are set they are very difficult to break.

As puppies there are few dogs more lovable this encourages one to bend  ones own rules allow your dog on your bed or your couch , know that  these habits you are setting for life ! We did this with our first Bully Ola and as much as i scream shout and chase her now , she exits the couch in the study after being screamed at , out she  runs around the house straight to the couch in the kids playroom,  no sooner busted there and she’s into the lounge and on the couch there , any opportunity she can take to climb on you and love you to bits she will , by comparison King arrived as an adult his owners having had bullies taught him Kingly manners , he never jumps up , he never climbs on the couch , he listens attentively and obeys and is a perfect gentleman in all instances .
